The following has been sent to medical staff on behalf Dr. Michelle Weizel, Associate Vice President Medicine & Deputy Chief Medical Officer.
Dear Colleagues,
As we prepare for the transition to our new medical leadership structure on March 1, 2026, I am pleased to announce that Dr. Andrew Clarke has accepted the role of Medical Director, Enhanced Medical Staff Support (EMSS). Dr. Clarke will join Dr. Bruce Campana in this important leadership role, working together to strengthen and support our medical staff community.
As Medical Directors for EMSS, Dr. Clarke and Dr. Campana supports senior leadership in setting and advancing the strategic direction for EMSS, translating that direction into clear, consistent, and high-quality service procedures. They serve as a central point of access for medical staff when EMSS-related concerns arise, offering guidance, coordination, and support to help ensure issues are addressed appropriately and swiftly.
Collaborating closely with Chiefs of Staff, departmental and program leaders across Island Health, this role ensures a coordinated and consistent approach to EMSS matters. It also consults with key internal and external partners—including Quality & Patient Safety, Risk Management, Respectful Workplace, regulatory bodies, and legal advisors—to support effective resolution and organizational learning.
Dr. Clarke is well positioned for this role. After completing postgraduate training in Toronto, Dr. Clarke practiced occupational medicine in Ontario for nearly 20 years before returning to British Columbia in 2008 to lead the Physician Health Program, now part of Doctors of BC. Over his 13-year tenure, he supported individual physicians and medical groups facing a wide range of professional and personal challenges.
In 2021, Dr. Clarke joined the Emergency Mental Health team at BC Children’s Hospital, providing care to young people and their families in both the Emergency Department and the inpatient stabilization unit (CAPE). He subsequently served for over a year as a Medical Advisor with WorkSafeBC. Most recently, he has joined the GP Psychiatry service within the Nanaimo Primary Care Network.
We are thrilled that Dr. Clarke will be stepping into this vital role – please join me in congratulating him.
