Recent violent events in Minneapolis and the conversations surrounding them can feel overwhelming and unsettling. Moments of uncertainty and shock affect us all differently. Following the slaying of a fellow ICU nurse on Saturday, NRGH ICU RN Aimee Ellison wrote and shared a poem on 'X' to express her feelings.

Healthcare professionals are known for showing up with compassion, strength and steadiness for others, especially in difficult times. It’s just as important to extend that same care to yourself. Taking time to pause, check in and lean on available supports for your own well-being strengthens your ability to continue supporting others.

On Wednesday, January 28th, at 5:30 pm, Island Health's Vice President of Quality, Research, and Chief Nursing and Allied Health Officer, Krista Allen, will pause to virtually join a candlelight vigil for Alex Pretti. She encourages all nurses and members of the Island Health care team to do the same if they are able.

If you need support, please take advantage of the available wellness resources.

No matter where we are or how busy we might get, we are not alone in this journey. Lean on each other, take time for yourself, and let’s continue to care for our community—both in and out of the healthcare setting.
