One of Island Health’s top priorities is to create a culture of safety and wellness for staff. As a health-care worker, you often experience high workloads, violence, and other pressures that affect your psychological wellness.

However, teams who make psychological health and safety a priority can gain huge benefits.

That’s why we’re introducing new psychological health and safety training that provides foundational knowledge for all staff and medical staff. Everyone is encouraged to take this optional training to help support yourself and your colleagues.

What new training is available?
  • introduction to psychological health and safety
  • optional, not mandatory
  • online, self-paced training
  • 60-minute module
  • available to all staff and medical staff

Learn about the national standards for psychological health and safety, factors that influence psychological well-being at work, psychological risk and supports in healthcare, and more.

By taking this training, you will be better able to support your team. Psychologically safe teams are more resilient, more engaged and more likely to stay at their workplace.

The training was based on curriculum developed by the Provincial Health Services Authority. It was adapted for use by Island Health and reviewed by multiple teams, including Respectful Workplace, Cultural Safety & Humility, Indigenous Recruitment & Retention, Medical & Academic Affairs, DEI, Health and Safety Prevention and more.

Based on the National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace, the training also aligns with related Island Health policy and procedures, including the HSO Cultural Safety & Humility Standard, anti-racism, equity, diversity and inclusion.
