​Island Health continues to set the standard for sustainable healthcare through its partnership with​ the Stryker Sustainability Solutions program. From 2021 to 2025, Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) has emerged as a provincial leader in eco-conscious surgical practices.

NRGH's Sustainability Achievements: 

  • Top facility in BC for usage of surgical reprocessed devices
  • Leader within Island Health in surgical device collection
  • Highest overall use of reprocessed medical tools and equipment across Island Health
  • 5,750 pounds of waste collected via Stryker Sustainability green bin program
  • 3,801 pounds of waste diverted from landfill through reprocessed device usage
  • $826,041.88 saved from 2021 to 2025 by utilizing reprocessed devices
  • Leading BC for reprocessed device spend, including Electrophysiology Labs on the mainland
