On behalf of: Quality Improvement Specialist
World Sepsis Day is an annual awareness event taking place September 13.
Sepsis, recognized by the World Health Organization as a global health priority, demands timely recognition and intervention. Island Health has been actively advancing sepsis care through its Sepsis Quality Improvement Project, launched in 2019. The initiative focuses on updating protocols, standardizing tools, and reducing variation in clinical practice to improve early detection and management in adults.
Over the past year, we’ve seen encouraging progress in sepsis improvement across Island Health. Engagement with the updated Sepsis Intranet Page continues to rise, with a 4% increase in both unique users and hits compared to last year. The highest engagement was recorded in January (172 unique users, 216 hits) and March (152 unique users, 216 hits), reflecting growing awareness and the positive impact of ongoing efforts.
At Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, a pilot project is underway to enhance early identification and treatment. A new Red Sepsis Screening Sheet at triage helps visually flag high-risk patients based on vital signs and infection indicators, prompting earlier physician involvement and timely activation of the Sepsis order set. In parallel, the Data & Analytics team is updating the Sepsis Site Level Measures report and incorporating new components to strengthen monitoring efforts, further supporting quality care across Island Health.
Stay tuned! Visit our Sepsis Intranet Page for more resources and updates. We encourage everyone to also explore the Global Sepsis Alliance - 5 Facts x 5 Actions theme on Sepsis.
