Pride 2023: Supporting Our Community

Posted on: June 12, 2023

Every June, communities across the world come together to celebrate, honour and show support for the 2SLGBTQI+ communities (two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer orpride-parade.png questioning, intersex and countless affirmative ways in which people choose to self-identify).

The celebration of Pride, as we know it today, commemorates the uprising and uniting following the Stonewall Riots of 1969. The Stonewall Riots (led predominantly by transgender women of colour) are largely understood as the defining cataclysm of America's gay-rights movement – uniting the 2SLGBTQI+ community against ongoing violence and persecution of the Queer community. In Canada, Pride was first celebrated in August of 1973. Since then, it has become an annual celebration and demonstration of the ongoing commitment and support of the 2SLGBTQI+ community.

As noted in the May 31 Pride article, we are recognizing Pride differently this year. In previous years Island Health has participated in the annual Pride parade to demonstrate our ongoing commitment and support of the 2SLGBTQI+ community, but we recognize Pride is much more than rainbow side walks, parades and events. In solidarity with our Queer staff, medical staff and volunteers – as well as our patients, clients and residents – we are donating the funds typically allotted to Pride parade registration to five local, community-based non-profit organizations to support them and their very important work:

  • Victoria Pride Society
  • Nanaimo Pride Society
  • Port Alberni Pride Society
  • Diverse & Inclusive SSI
  • North Island Pride Society

Island Health is committed to strengthening the work we do as it relates to 2SLGBTQI+ issues. As a health authority, we have an ongoing responsibility to create a welcoming and positive space for all 2SLGBTQI+ people—where our workforce and the people we serve feel respected, supported and celebrated.

THISWEEK, feel free to share the names of any Queer owned businesses or artists in the comments for others to see and support. Happy Pride!
