The following has been sent on behalf of Dr. Ben Williams, Vice President Medicine, Quality and Chief Medical Officer
Colleagues, I’m thrilled to share that later this morning our President and CEO will be sharing today’s appointment of Marko Peljhan in the role of Vice President, Clinical Services Centre/South Island and Provincial Programs with the Island Health family.
Marko has held the role of Interim Vice President, Clinical Operations since last summer and previous to that position was Vice President for Pandemic Planning. Following a national search, Marko was chosen as the preferred candidate for the Clinical Services role.
Our President and CEO Kathy MacNeil, has made some changes to the portfolio’s within Island Health, one of which is Marko’s new title which reflects his new responsibilities within the organisation. This change will ensure strong connections to support local decision making and advance some of the key learnings we have gained through COVID. It also mirrors structures in some other health authorities.
Community-based services across Island Health – primary care, community care, mental health and substance use, and long-term care – will report to the Vice President, Clinical Services, Acute Care North & Community Services. James Hanson – who is currently Marko’s clinical operations VP partner, will fill this role. James will also have oversight of hospitals in the North Island, West Coast and Salt Spring Island. This realignment will strengthen the critical connection between hospital and community services.
All three tertiary hospitals and acute programming and services, along with the other South Island hospitals, Cowichan Redevelopment and provincial programs (Renal, Heart Health, Cancer Care), will report to one Vice President under Marko’s leadership. In addition to these changes, we are proceeding with functional alignments in other portfolios to better organize work that is interdependent. We are also strengthening our comprehensive approach to deliver measurable and meaningful outcomes for those we serve.
The updated executive organization chart is here.
These changes take effect today.
Vice Presidents will support each other and their impacted teams through a period of transition over the next several weeks. To support the shifts in the Clinical Services portfolios, Marko and James will be engaging with their teams and patient partners in the design of their work to ensure we maximize the opportunity for island-wide quality and safety standards, while ensuring a robust matrix relationship is in place to support effective and timely local decision making.
Please join me in welcoming Marko as a permanent Vice President and member of the Executive Leadership Team.
