Where did you complete medical school and residency?

I completed my medical school in 2000 at the University of Alberta and subsequent residency in family medicine in 2002.  After practicing for a few years, I re-entered a radiology residency at UBC from 2008-2012, with an additional fellowship in cardiac imaging in 2012-2013

Why did you choose your field of specialty?

I love radiology for the intellectual challenge it provides every single day.  I love the numerous procedures that allow me to use a different type of skill set.  I love the interaction I have with clinicians.

What is most meaningful to you about practicing medicine?

Though as a radiologist, I have limited interactions with patients, I truly believe in providing the best diagnostic care and aiding the clinicians to make appropriate treatment decisions in the care of our patients.

What are your professional interests and notable achievements?

I am currently the cardiothoracic lead in our department and have enjoyed the numerous multidisciplinary rounds and contributions radiology can make in patient care.

What are your hopes for the future of healthcare?

Above all else, I hope that our family doctors are listened to and provided whatever it takes for them to continue to provide longitudinal care.  The severe lack of family doctors providing longitudinal care is a TRUE CRISIS.  Everyone needs a family doctor, and we all talk about how much we need them, so it is time that we actively listen, engage, and enact true changes in support of our family physician colleagues.

What hobbies or activities do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

In the winter, I can be found on the slopes of Mt Washington or cheering/ferrying my girls to the hockey rink. Summers are usually spent hiking in the woods or along the beach.  I am in the Peloton craze like everyone else.

Is there anything else you would like us to share?

Thank you to all the healthcare workers that continue to come to work every single day despite the challenges that the pandemic has created both personally and professionally.

Welcome Dr. Nguyen to your new position, Medical Lead, Medical Imaging, MRI
