Where did you complete medical school and residency?

UBC for medical school, residency and fellowships

Why did you choose your field of specialty?

While Pediatric medicine can be challenging both intellectually and emotionally, it is generally a very uplifting environment in which to work. Our patients are strong and resilient, and they bring their families with them for support. Pediatric Critical Care, in particular, requires a team based approach, and I love the knowledge, skill and compassion that the people that I work with bring to our unit.

What is most meaningful to you about practicing medicine?

The trust that families place in our team to care for their children. This is an enormous responsibility. Personally, I want to continually improve my own skills and knowledge, and I want our team to be able to provide the best possible care for the children and families we serve.

What are your professional interests and notable achievements?

I love using simulation as a tool for medical learning. We have built a robust curriculum targeting key areas for our undergraduate and postgraduate learners, and increasingly, we are utilizing simulation for our professional teams as well.

What hobbies or activities do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

There is a long list of activities and adventures to explore here on Vancouver Island. When my wife and I are not spending life in a minivan, shuttling our three kids between their activities, We love to hike and kayak as much as possible. This past summer, I also started doing some open water swims with some of my colleagues. I am looking forward to when the lakes warm up enough to get back to doing more this spring.
