Welcome, Dr. Andrew Tyrrell, to the Medical Lead, Anesthesia at Royal Jubilee Hospital.
Dr. Tyrrell completed his medical school at the University of Toronto and residency at the University of Ottawa. He chose his field of specialty because of the variety of practice with patients across the human life span but he especially likes to care for patients at the sicker end of the disease spectrum. Interventions in anesthesia tend to show immediate effect and this suits his dislike of delayed gratification. Dr. Tyrrell gets his greatest professional reward from supporting patients through their suffering and seeing them safely through the trauma of surgery. His professional interests are quality improvement through data collection, the relationship between geographic access to healthcare and outcomes, and analgesia for obstetric patients. His hopes for the future of healthcare are a more efficient use of the limited resources available and provision of greater equality in access to healthcare. He also hopes, "that as a nation, we can more seriously confront ourselves with the question of what we want the goals of our healthcare system to be". In his spare time, Dr. Tyrrell enjoys cycling and painting.
