We are pleased to welcome Dr. John Galbraith as the new Medical Lead, Microbiology Molecular Diagnostics.
Getting to know Dr. John Galbraith
- Where did you complete medical school and residency?
I graduated from the University of Alberta Medical School in Edmonton and subsequently completed certification in family medicine, internal medicine, medical microbiology and infectious diseases.
- Why did you choose your field of specialty?
I spent three months in Kenya as a medical student and became fascinated with infectious diseases.
- What is most meaningful to you about practicing medicine?
The opportunity to work with so many outstanding people.
- What are your professional interests and notable achievements?
I’ve always been an advocate for laboratory reform and have served in leadership positions in both Alberta and BC working to integrate laboratory services across sites and regions. I’ve become particularly interested in Quality Improvement and was fortunate to be in Island Health’s first Physician Quality Improvement (PQI) cohort. I currently serve as chair of Island Health’s PQI Steering Committee and am a Doctors of BC Representative on the provincial Physician Quality Improvement Working Group.
- What are your hopes for the future of healthcare?
My hope is for every health care worker to fall in love with their job. I’m sure that will lead to the best experience and outcomes for our patients.
- What hobbies or activities do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
My favourite pastime is playing with my grandchildren. I have five so far J
