On April 25, Nanaimo welcomed hundreds of American healthcare workers as part of a growing grassroots initiative aimed at attracting talent to Vancouver Island.
The Nanaimo Infusion event, sparked by local residents Todd and Jocelyn Maffin, invited healthcare professionals from across the United States to explore what it's like to live and work in the region - highlighting both the urgent need for healthcare workers and the strong sense of community that defines Island Health.
For many visitors who attended the event at Maffeo Sutton Park, the decision to attend was deeply personal.
“I have a trans child, and I'm looking for a place where we can feel safer," shared one attendee, who works as a nurse. “The people here are so kind, welcoming, and understanding of the challenges we're all facing right now. It makes you want to be here."
Island Health was actively involved throughout the weekend, with approximately 25 staff on site connecting with prospective candidates and sharing information about opportunities across the organization.
The approach is already showing results. Following a similar event last year, Island Health welcomed approximately 150 new hires from the United States.
Recruitment efforts span a wide range of roles - from physicians and physiotherapists to skilled trades, including electricians - reflecting the diverse needs across our health system.
An open house at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital the day before drew nearly 100 American healthcare workers, with additional information sessions and site visits continuing throughout the weekend.
Beyond recruitment, the event focused on building relationships and showcasing the unique qualities of the Island.
“I just want to thank Todd and Jocelyn for everything they've built," said Carlie Powell, Director, Recruitment Services. “People are genuinely excited to meet them and see the partnerships they've created. It's something special."
Interest in the initiative continues to grow. More than 600 Americans registered for this year's event, and the model has expanded nationally, with more than 40 similar initiatives now taking place across Canada.
For many attendees, the message is clear: Vancouver Island offers not only meaningful career opportunities, but also a welcoming and supportive place to call home.
