The two-day ACoRN session engaged 15 dedicated perinatal and newborn care providers from Campbell River Hospital and Comox Valley Hospital, including family practitioners, midwives, and nurses. Through simulations, participants practiced responding as a multidisciplinary team to newborn emergencies. The hands-on format allowed providers to refine their technical skills, strengthen communication and build confidence in stabilizing unwell or premature newborns who often require transfer to higher level of care.

The success of the workshop reflects strong support from both regional and local operational leadership, who continue to prioritize education as a cornerstone of quality perinatal care. For more than two years, the ACoRN program has been steadily growing, providing training opportunities to foster multidisciplinary collaboration and clinical readiness when caring for unwell newborns across Island Health.

Looking ahead, the program is focused on expanding instructor team capacity to support sustainability and consistent delivery of workshops across the region. By investing in people and building teaching capacity, the program is helping ensure that newborns and families receive safe, timely and coordinated care.

The next ACoRN workshop will be held at the Cowichan Distric Hospital in November. If you have any questions about participating in the workshop, email RegionalPerinatalNewbornQuality@islandhealth.ca.
