Across Canada, medical trainees contribute to the delivery of high-quality patient care. At Island Health, work to improve the resident doctor experience is an embedded priority. In late 2024, a dedicated web page was launched to help these medical trainees prepare for residency at Island Health sites. Work is on-going to support and engage resident doctors, while ensuring health authority commitments under the provincial framework are met.
In anticipation of Resident Appreciation Week, February 10-14, Dr. Jodie Turner, Medical Director, Postgraduate Medical Education, shares a celebratory message recognizing the vital role residents play in our healthcare system:
One of the most enjoyable aspects of being a staff physician is engaging with, and working alongside, residents. These postgraduate colleagues and future medical leaders bring passion and curiosity to daily discussions around patient care. Residency is a period of intense learning, dedicated work, and accelerated professional development that is completely unique to the medical profession. The diversity of the residents within Island Health is vast, and their interests and insights equally so. We share our heartfelt appreciation of resident colleagues and toast their achievements—past, present, and future—as compassionate healthcare practitioners.
