After over 10 years as Medical Director of Seniors Health, Dr. Marilyn Malone is stepping down to concentrate on her clinical practice in geriatrics.
After first obtaining a B.Sc. in Biological Sciences from Simon Fraser University in 1990, Dr. Malone graduated from UBC Medical School in 1994, completed Internal Medicine residency in 1997, a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine in 1999, and a Masters of Health Sciences in Health Care and Epidemiology in 2000 at UBC.
Her clinical practice began in Vancouver, and since 2005, she has primarily worked in Victoria. In 2014, she successfully initiated an interdisciplinary telehealth practice for patients with cognitive concerns when there was a temporary critical shortage of geriatric specialists in Nanaimo. For over 20 years, Dr. Malone provided geriatric outreach service to many rural communities in northern B.C. She has a diploma from SFU’s Physician Executive Management Program, and was in the inaugural graduating class of UBC’s Sauder School of Business Physician Leadership Program 2013.
Marilyn has been dedicated to improving elder care, particularly for seniors with dementia, frailty, or other complex medical issues. She tirelessly advocated to support dementia care in all settings and helped to establish Island Health’s Primary Care Memory Clinics. She is also passionate about combating ageism within the healthcare system
On behalf of Island Health and the Senior’s Health team, we would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Malone for her long-standing service and her unwavering dedication to improving the care of seniors across Island Health. We wish her the very best for her future endeavours.
