Medical Leaders attended a successful in-person event in May on ‘Crucial Conversations for Medical Leaders: Managing Conflict in the Workplace”. The workshop included dynamic and informative presentations from Dr. Liisa Honey & Dr. Richard Mimeault (Canadian Medical Protective Association), and Ms. Shayla Stein (Associate Legal Counsel, Island Health). One of the workshop's key facilitators, Ms. Linda Dobson - a certified Conflict Coach - helps leaders understand how they can positively impact their organizations, while changing perspectives about conflict from fear and avoidance, into creative opportunities to learn. During the workshop, attendees acquired strategies to employ if a conversation derails, as well how to apply a conflict resolution roadmap, from initiation to action. Team building was a popular theme for the day, and attendees had a fantastic opportunity to problem solve and interact with their colleagues at the Four Points Sheraton in Langford. Attendees remarked that the workshop provided ‘concise and practical advice’ with a ‘great mix of theory and practical tips’. This event was part of the Island Health Medical Leadership Development program that covers workshop topics nominated by our frontline Medical Leaders, to enhance their skills and comfort level with the challenges of building a high performing health care system.
