Walking Our Pride: Team Conversation

Posted on: June 15, 2022

Knowledge is great; action is better!

Last week staff were encouraged to expand their knowledge of 2SLGBTQ+ communities by walking the 2LGBTQ+ Learning Pathway. This week we invite you to have a conversation with your team and explore these two questions:

  1. How do we make our workplace more welcoming and inclusive for 2SLGBTQ+ employees, and free from discrimination, stigma and bias?

  2. How do we make our services more welcoming and inclusive for 2SLGBTQ+ patients/ clients/ residents, and free from discrimination, stigma and bias?

You are encouraged to brainstorm this question as a team before you look outside for strategies. If you're stuck and need some inspiration, review page 1 of TransCare BC's Accessible Care Strategies for organizations and programs.

Collective action is required to make a change. Come up with 1-2 commitments you can action as a team and share with pride@islandhealth.ca.

One more thing…

We received some good questions from colleagues that we're answering here in case you're also wondering…

Q. Is Island Health participating in Pride parades this year?

As an organization, we have loved participating in Pride parades over the last number of years. This year, Island Health is taking a purposeful pause and focusing on self-refection, learning, open dialogue and team commitments towards creating more inclusive workplaces and healthcare services. Island Health's Pride working team will not be officially arranging groups to participate but encourage individual/teams to participate in Pride Parades and share their celebration moments through Flickr album. We are hopeful that this internal work will help us take actions toward change that we can all celebrate together at the 2023 Pride Parades.

Q. How can I show my support?

There are many ways for you to show your support for 2SLGBTQ+ communities:
