Island Health’s annual priorities and outcome goals share the priority work of the organization, and creates clarity, focus and alignment for organizational leaders to the work that needs to be undertaken to advance our change agenda. Our annual priorities and subsequent outcome goals are designed to drive us towards achieving our 5-Year Strategic Framework destination.
Over the past year, we paused releasing annual priorities as we were focused on responding to the dual threat of the COVID pandemic and drug toxicity crisis, and our strategic health human resource challenges. Through these experiences, we were able to see the positive impacts of having a clear vision and aligned priorities to achieve a common objective.
While we are a different organization today than we were two years ago, our Strategic Framework still holds true. The four pillars (previously called goals) of our Strategic Framework have not changed:
- Improve the experience, quality and outcomes for the people we serve
- Improve the experience, health and wellbeing of all people at Island Health
- Increase health system value and ensure sustainability
- Improve population health and wellness
Our vision and values also held us strong during COVID. When we were in times of uncertainty and didn’t have a clear roadmap to respond to some situations – our vision and values guided us. As we move forward as an organization, our annual priorities and outcome goals reflect eight new priorities with 25 short-term outcome goals that describe where we want to go and where we expect to be at the end of this fiscal year.
Today, in our facilities, our programs and communities – our teams are under tremendous pressure. Many likely wonder how we can possibly focus on the future with the challenges we are facing today. The challenges are large today, and they will be even larger tomorrow if we don’t change; if we don’t innovate… if we don’t do things differently.
This is where leadership matters. The next step is for leaders to engage their teams in conversation to bring clarity around the priorities and outcome goals, and to help staff and teams see how their work connects to our overall success.
